Links to Netflix, Prime Video, iTunes, Kindle, etc

mjg - @January 14, 2021

What problem are you trying to solve?

I’d like to go directly from an entry to watching/reading/whatever.

Explain your ideal solution?

Depending on the media, links to the appropriate app or web page

How are you currently solving this problem today?

Going to Home Screen, finding app & tapping on it, then searching for what I already had onscreen in Sofa

Thanks for taking the time to make a suggestion!

I would love this feature too. I do have plans for sprucing up the detail pages for items, and adding links (when possible) to the places you can enjoy them. This will be tricky for some things because the data isn’t freely accessible, for instance where to watch stuff (Netlifx, HBO, etc).

No timeline yet, but stay tuned.

Maybe look into how apps like JustWatch and Reelgood do it?

Shawn - @January 14, 2021

I’ve actually applied for the JustWatch API a few times and haven’t ever heard back. I might be a little too small for them right now . I’ll just keep applying until someone answers lol.

Hey! Opening this convo back up since you discussed this in your 3.0 update video. If JustWatch won’t give you API access, what about just a handy link to JustWatch? For those of us who have that app, it would just instantly open the movie / show in JustWatch, and then we could quickly switch back to Sofa. Thanks!

Funny enough, I was just thinking the same thing earlier today

Shawn - @July 28, 2021

That’s an interesting idea. I’ll see if they have a simple way of deep linking into their app.

JustWatch Mrs. Doubtfire streaming: where to watch online? Is Mrs. Doubtfire streaming? Find out where to watch online amongst 45+ services including Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video.

JustWatch A Serious Man streaming: where to watch online? Is A Serious Man streaming? Find out where to watch online amongst 45+ services including Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video.

Though it gets (slightly) more complicated for remakes and movies with the same title:

JustWatch True Grit streaming: where to watch movie online? Where is True Grit streaming? Find out where to watch online amongst 45+ services including Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video.

Would love the ability to just add a link to an item I’ve added. There might be multiple ways for someone to get to the item they’ve added to their library, most of which can just be gotten to by just a link to the content.

For example, I have some PDFs of books or essays in my Dropbox that I’d like to keep track of in Sofa - would be awesome it I could just provide a link to it.

Shawn - @August 14, 2021

Interesting scenario. I hadn’t considered people wanting to link to things in their own data sources. You could use a Sticky Note as a very bad hack for now.

Greiss122 - @August 17, 2021

Love this idea. Would be great to have a custom “card” link for something - a short film on Vimeo I’d like to watch, for example; it likely wouldn’t come up on IMDB, but I’d love to be able to save the link in Sofa.

Or as a better example, would be cool to be able to make a list of YouTube videos to watch!

Shawn - @August 18, 2021

I personally find YouTube’s “watch later” feature to be pretty great. Would you be expecting to use Sofa in a similar way?

Greiss122 - @August 18, 2021

Fair, but being able to collect links in Sofa would allow for adding articles, web comics, Vimeo / YouTube / other videos, sites to check out, and etc. I do get that you could argue this would kind of make sofa into a Pocket type app, but I think there’s enough reason to consider it!
